Since the late 1800s, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, has served as a relaxing retreat for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in the warmer months. Located just 80 miles from Chicago and 50 miles from Milwaukee, its location provides convenient access to the city experience while remaining far enough away to serve as a summertime sanctuary.

Lavish mansions surround the 21-mile circumference of the lake—including those that once served as vacation homes for the Wrigleys and Schwinns, to name a couple of the prominent families who set up summer residence. Today, the properties’ inhabitants travel from around the world for their annual respite on the water. Visitors can view these elaborate estates from Geneva Lake aboard Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s U.S. Mailboat tour for a scenic cruise as they witness the unique postal delivery service that’s taken place daily, from June 15th to September 15th, for more than a century. Those wishing to take a closer peek at the stunning homes can walk the public shore path that winds around the lake.

Whether you choose to walk the shore path, participate in bike or kayak tours, or peruse the local shops and farmer’s market, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Luckily, there’s no shortage of delicious cuisine—from succulent seafood fare to comforting Italian favorites. Pier 290 offers up unparalleled waterfront views, while Oakfire serves savory wood-fired pizzas. When in Wisconsin, cheese curds are a must, and they’re readily available as appetizers. Enjoy a more intimate setting for dinner at Barrique Bistro & Wine Bar, where a seasonal menu, specialty cocktails, and exceptional wines provide the ultimate dining experience.

Nestled in a tranquil woodland setting, the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Grand Geneva Resort & Spa features opulent design elements for a luxurious lodging option. Boasting two championship golf courses, both indoor and outdoor pools, and fine dining, it proves to be a destination in itself. Walkable to downtown and the shore path, Maxwell Mansion is a boutique hotel complete with an underground speakeasy. From rooms with antique furnishings to those with more rustic influence, this locale achieves an enchanting step back in time.
