“It’s always been a dream of mine to have a solarium or conservatory type of space,” says homeowner Natalie Kelly. Growing up in Pennsylvania, she fondly recalls trips to Pittsburgh’s Phipps Conservatory as well as the historic home of Henry Clay Frick, which includes a greenhouse on the property. So, years later, when looking to add another living space to her home, Natalie drew inspiration from her past and the European conservatories that captured her imagination on Pinterest, creating a solarium of her own.

When it came to the design, Natalie wanted the space to flow seamlessly with the rest of the home, which was built in the 1920s and features original lead glass windows throughout the first floor. Though a new find, the tiles lend an Old-World charm with their mosaic-style design. Heated floors ensure the room remains cozy once winter’s chill sets in while the high ceilings make the most of the surrounding view as they contribute to the light and airy aesthetic.

Since the room serves as a second living space, a large sofa with plenty of throw pillows provides a comfy perch for starting the morning with a cup of coffee. A pair of white wicker rocking chairs offers additional seating. A neutral scheme sets a tranquil tone and shifts the focus to the picturesque scenery outside. “I wanted the furniture and the décor to not take away from the outdoors but blend in and complement the outdoors,” Natalie says.

To emphasize the room’s indoor-outdoor feel, Natalie decorated with rustic, antique pieces—from a mantel featuring intricate carvings to a medical cabinet that once graced a dental office. However, come Christmas—her favorite time to decorate—the pieces are adorned with holiday accessories. There’s no shortage of trees and greenery, sure to add a fresh and festive flair. The snow-covered cottages, snowflakes, and garlands of vintage mittens are just a few seasonal touches that can last well into the new year.

Although beautiful during the warmer months when the solarium is filled with potted plants in full bloom, the space becomes almost magical in winter. “I love it when we have a snowfall,” Natalie says. “It almost looks like you’re sitting inside of a snow globe.”
