Not every renovation requires knocking down walls and demolishing shelving; sometimes, the most transformative projects masterfully use the same floor plan in a new and imaginative way. As Samantha Lane, cofounder of Baltimore, Maryland-based design firm Ann Lane Home, began a kitchen renovation for a young family, she saw the vision of what the room could be even with its existing footprint.
Samantha’s path to interior design was a little unconventional, having started with a career in politics and nonprofit work, but these experiences molded her ability to analyze systems and how people interact within their spaces. “What keeps me inspired is seeing how design can truly change the way people live,” she says. For this project, Samantha’s client sought a kitchen that felt boutique and deeply personal while evoking the warmth and charm of the Cotswolds in England.

The homeowner, a mother of two young children and an avid baker who shares her delectable creations on social media, needed a space that would serve as an inspiring backdrop for her content and suit the practicalities of family life. She wished for something unexpected yet warm, inviting, and a little bit romantic, which guided Samantha’s decision for the kitchen’s most distinctive feature: soft pink cabinetry.
The blushing hue, with its earthy undertones, reads as a neutral, gentle in the daylight and cozy by evening. “We wanted every material in the kitchen to feel intentional and layered, so the combination of textures and finishes really drives the overall character of the space,” Samantha says. To build upon this rosy base, she chose Zellige tiles in a star-and-cross pattern for the backsplash behind the range, wide beadboard panels painted to match the cabinets, soapstone countertops, brass hardware, and a cast-iron farmhouse sink. Partnered with the pink, the look “was a bold choice,” Samantha says, “but it reflects the homeowner perfectly—confident, creative, and unafraid to take risks.”

Bold choices in the kitchen reach a masterful harmony; the deep hue of soapstone countertops is softened by wood accents and especially Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground. The grouping strikes an ideal level of contrast that all works together, while a minimalist approach to countertop displays allows these elements to shine. A dainty work of art, terra-cotta vessels, and a single cookbook finish the look.
To complement the refreshed kitchen, Samantha also added a new mudroom, a hardworking yet charming area that stores belongings while offering a seamless transition into the home’s main living areas.
“I hope people walk in and feel an immediate sense of warmth and connection,” Samantha says. In this pink-hued kitchen, beauty meets purpose, and every carefully chosen detail tells the story of a home filled with heart.
