“We made it all a little more user friendly,” Kelly says. “We really tried to utilize the space they had without going crazy.” By taking out walls and reconfiguring the space, they were able to create an open-concept kitchen with an eat-in area and plenty of counter space. With three daughters, the clients wanted room for their active lives, so plenty of countertop space for weeknight homework was a must-have. The oval dining table fits the narrow area while providing a chic look.
Subtle details make this kitchen special, such as the custom hand-drawn hood design and molding on the cabinets. Painted a light shade of blue, thin molding provides interest to the cabinets. “We were trying to get creative with a new spin on a cabinet front detail,” Kelly says. “It plays off the curvature on the hood as well.” When closed, it creates a full design but does not obstruct the doors from opening. Another nod to the custom hood is the tile backsplash behind the stove and sink areas. Delicate carved marble tiles lay together to create this wonderfully intricate design.
Complementary to the blue-and-white kitchen, an adjacent laundry room also received Kelly’s designer touch. Navy cabinets provide plenty of storage, while gold door pulls and a flower-shaped light fixture bring a playful note to the space. A hand-painted motif, done by artist Bridget McCart, adds whimsy to this petite room, making chores a bit more joyful. “As a mother of three, I always come from a place of practicality,” Kelly says. “We definitely strive to leave our clients with spaces that are both beautiful and can function very well.”
