Spanning continents and centuries, blue-and-white china has proven to be a time-tested fan favorite—and with good reason. This beloved tabletop pairing’s origins date back to 14th-century China, where artisans identified cobalt oxide as the only pigment able to survive the high firing temperatures necessary for producing their fine porcelain. As these wares made their way along trade routes, Europe found itself immediately enchanted with these imported beauties. It didn’t take long for other manufactures to follow suit, and today’s collectors find themselves with a plethora of Asian, Scandinavian, English, and American patterns to choose from. Collecting is just the beginning, as styling these lovely pieces proves to be just as thrilling as the hunt itself.

Today, blue-and-white china can be found in tones ranging from dusty blue to classic cobalt and even deep navy. Create captivating contrast by opting to style patterns boasting brighter hues alongside gentler, more understated shades.

With endless options to choose from, starting a collection can feel a little overwhelming. You can refine your search by determining if there are specific patterns you’d like to collect—such as Staffordshire’s Liberty Blue or Tulip Time Blue by Johnson Brothers—or you can focus on collecting a specific item, like trays and plates or pitchers and ginger jars.

To the side, there is a collection of blue and white vases of differing sizes, each adorned with similar blue patterns, and filled with an assortment of fresh flowers in white and yellow. A small porcelain pitcher with a blue design is also visible. The tablecloth mirrors the designs on the dishes and vases, adding to the cohesive aesthetic. The scene conveys a sophisticated and vibrant table setting, primarily in shades of blue and white.

Don’t let the lack of a completed set keep you from entertaining. A blue-and-white toile table linen serves as an ideal backdrop for mixing and matching your favorite patterns.
